Review: Daughter of the Burning City, Amanda Foody

Daughter of the Burning City was surprisingly good. Since The Night Circus and The Greatest Showman I love reading about the circus life and this book didn't disappoint!

I started it without knowing what it was about and find myself surprised after the first murder (this is not a spoiler). I fell in love with Sorina, her illusions, and the atmosphere of the Gomorrah Festival. The heartache Sorina went through made my heart ache as well. The book was full of mystery, the ending was surprising, I kept wondering what was happening and who was betraying Sorina.
Sorina is an atypical main character, she has no eyes but can see and she has the power to create illusions, who she considers like her family. Every illusion has a special ability or deformity and has a special place in her family and perform a show in the Gomorrah Festival together.  They are a happy family until the first murder. Afterwards everything goes south as the family falls apart and Sorina doesn’t know who to trust anymore.
Thank the god an awesome human being (Luca) appears in the book who for whatever reason wants to help Sorina discover the truth. Luca, like Sorina, has a special power, he can’t die and doesn’t mind letting people kill him to earn some money. I really enjoyed getting to know him. He is enigmatic, brooting and good looking (Sorina said it). What ‘s not to like right?

Anyway, this book was a really good surprise and I wouldn’t mind reading it again as the entire cast of character was amazing.
