Review: The Captive Prince, CS Pacat

My is this gonna be a controversial review! It seems that these books are either loved or loathed and personally, I adored them!

The Captive Prince is a trilogy, following Damen heir to the Akielos throne, who is enslaved by his brother and send to a rival kingdom to serve as Laurent's pleasure slave. Upon arriving at Vere Damon spirals into a world of deceive. Nothing is as it seems and no one is who he claims. It's a soft Game of Thrones without the Mother of Dragons, dragons or Jon Snow. Indeed, the end game of this saga is to know who will end up on the throne... The step brother who thinks it's his birthright, the uncle who rivals with Scar's ingenuity or actually the rightful heirs to the throne?

The first book, The Captive Prince, introduces all the players, but we are seeing things through Damen's point of view so not everything is immediately obvious. At first, Laurent, Vere's heir, appears as a cold manipulator and his uncle, the regent, as a carrying man. However, little by little Damon realizes that everything is not as it seems and even after everything Laurent put him true he starts to get attached to his abuser. Is this a case of Stockohlm syndrom? I guess some might think it is, but I think Damon thinks he deserves it because he caused immense pain to Laurent when he killed his brother. He sees Laurent's torture as a form of redemption.

Fast forward to the second book where Laurent is forced to guard the border and takes Damen with him. It's still full of strategy to stay alive, expose the usurper and get to the throne. But it is also full of lust, love and mistrust. Damen and Laurent like each other, but their mistrust of each other runs deep and it keeps them from truly being together.

In the final chapter mistrust is high, but love runs deeper. Damen and Laurent will have to get over their difficulties to finally defeat their enemies and be together in peace.

I loved this series and I would advise everyone to read it if you like adventure, romance and lgbtq+ books. My favorite character was Laurent. He is enigmatic, cold, pragmatic and diabolical as fuck. He is smart and strong. But you know he has had a hard past and has learned to survive in a world full of deceive. He is honestly the best part of the series. Plus, his relationship with Damen is full of twist and turns and I am living for all the drama!

As for Damon he is this strong, naive and righteous man, who wants to do good. He starts to help Laurent, his abuser, just to be able to get back to his kingdom and help his people. But progressively, he gets to know his enemy and gives Laurent the benefice of the doubt,  his friendship and more.
