Review: The Shadows Between Us, Tricia Levenseller

This book was on my radar for a while as it was described as a Slytherin romance (my house)! After reading it I can see why it is described that way, but I was still disappointed as the characters weren’t ruthless enough for Slytherin characters.

Alessandra is described as ruthless and driven. She will not hesitate to kill anyone who is in her way. What does she want? Power. How will she achieve it? By marrying the King and then kill him. How does she plan to succeed? With her charms… How clever…

Once the King takes notice of her half of the work is done and she moves into the palace. Once there she isn’t prepared for all the intrigues inside the castle and the numerous murder attempts on the King. She ends up protecting him at first because he can’t die before she marries him, but then she develops feelings for him and will protect him no matter what. Cute right? But I had a hard time getting why she fell in love with the King as they didn’t share much time or conversations together (however, I have to say that when they did spend time together I loved their interactions).

Alessandra is just too much and not enough. She is described as a smart girl, even smarter then the King’s council, which seems not plausible and from smart we go to obsess with fashion and the book keeps describing her outfits, what she thinks about the other ladies outfits, etc. and I just couldn’t care about that and didn’t understand why it was included in the book. It seemed to me like it was just to fill the book who isn’t that substantial.

Indeed, throughout the book you get not much valuable info until you have a few pages left to read the most important part of the plot.

I gave this book 3 stars because I loved its atmosphere and the chemistry between the main characters, but it could have been sooo much better!
