Review: You Deserve Each Other, Sarah Hogle

My summary of this book: Fun, funny and funnier.

After Nicholas and Naomie come back from a disastrous game night their relationship takes a U-turn as Naomie realizes she isn’t the only one who is dissatisfied in their relationship. Indeed, poor little Naomie fallowed in her dissatisfaction for most of their relationship. But after pretending for two years that they were the perfect couple she didn’t have the courage to confess to everyone that it was all a lie. But now that she has understood that Nicholas has been toying with her for a while, she is ready to play the same game and nothing will stop her. She will do all she can to make Nicholas break up with her so she can be the victim in their failed relationship. But is Nicholas really playing the same game? During the novel he fights and provokes her, but it seems his end game is quite different.

The pranks they pull on each other are childish but funny and through those pranks you see them come back to life and in the end fight for each other. They start to communicate and understand that you have to make sacrifices on both sides, but more importantly be there for each other and have each other’s back. It was so great to see them stand up for one another and finally realize that they should have done that since the beginning and that it is never too late to realize their mistakes and start again.

From the beginning, the author depicts her characters the worst way possible: They are both seen as egocentric. Naomie only thinks about what is more convenient to her and Nicholas does the same. This personality trait is highlighted when he interacts with his mother and puts her needs over the needs of his fiancĂ©e. Not because he is a loving son, but because he is a scared one who finds it more convenient to grand all his mother’s wishes. She ends up in charge of the wedding and won’t even let the bride choose her own wedding dress. I can understand from this only fact that Naomie was sick of him and his overbearing family.
I know a lot of people won’t like her at the beginning of the book because of her attitude, but I didn't mind her pettiness because I can understand that you get lost in life and don’t know how to get your life back on track. I didn't like that she wanted to settle down with Nicholas because it was more convenient than to look like a loser by canceling a disastrous wedding, but I still empathized with her and believed that she could do better than that.
