Four stars
for a book that was brilliantly different. This book follows Cécile de Troyes as
she is kidnapped and brought into troll land to break a curse that kept the
trolls trapped for five centuries. Upon arriving, Cécile is trust into a marriage
with Tristan, the Prince of the trolls and although they won’t admit it they
feel an instant attraction for each other. Throughout the book they learn more
about each other and despite their differences fall in love.
The book is
swoon worthy, but it also has more important subjects like politics, race and
equality.
The trolls
are ruled by a King whose only wish is to free his people and who will do
anything to achieve that. Actually, scratch that, he doesn’t want to free his
people, he just wants his own freedom and rule the human race again just as it
was before the curse.
Humans are
considered like pets to the trolls and the half-humans-half-trolls are enslaved
in different categories depending on their powers. Let’s just say Cécile becoming a troll
princess is very unusual. Some will hate her for it and others will see her as
their savior.
Cécile is a
very relatable character as she has many mixed emotions. When she learns about
the inequality of the land she wants to fight for the more unfortunate and give
them their freedom, but at the same time she desperately wants to escape and
get her live back. Confusing much? Add true love in the mix and our girl doesn’t
know what’s best for her anymore.
Tristan is
a passionate, compassionate and powerful troll who loves and cares deeply. He
is the heir to the throne and wants what is best for his people. He doesn’t
care about race and falls easily in love with his human wife. Together they
will learn what true love is and what one is ready to sacrifice to protect the
person you love.
