Review: Ruthless Knight, A. Jade

Ruthless Knight is the second book in the Royal Hearts Academy series. If you haven’t read the first book Cruel Prince about Jace and Dylan you won’t understand the back story and the relationship between the characters. But don’t worry, the first book is as good as this one!

The author doesn’t describe it as a sweet romance which I agree and disagree with. Let me explain why.

This book is about Sawyer and Cole. Sawyer is sweet, an active member of her church, a good friend, her only problem is her weight and the bullying that goes with it. Cole is the bad boy, the school king and deeply fake. They shouldn’t like each other, but they do and that makes for a great love story.
Why isn’t it describe as a sweet love story? Because Cole is a bastard, who doesn’t want to assume his attraction to Sawyer. It doesn’t sit well with his reputation to be attracted to the fat girl. Why do I think it is a sweet love story? Despite his BIG mistakes Cole is deeply in love with Sawyer and can be excused for some of his actions because of his past. Furthermore, he tries to be a better person and fix his mistakes.

I was happy to finally see a fat main character who doesn’t need to lose weight to keep the boy she likes. Cole likes Sawyer the way she is and even challenges the people who criticizes her for her overweight. However, it is not because her boyfriend’s accepts her that everyone else does and worst of all she doesn’t accept herself. After years of bullying by her mother and her classmates she believes she is not worth of love and can’t expect much out of life. I, myself, am a big girl and I was happy to see this representation as I thought it was accurate and I could recognize myself in Sawyer.

Cole also lacks self-worth due to his past and thinks he has to pretend to be someone else to be accepted and respected. His relationship with Sawyer will challenge all his believes and make him see his worth and finally believe he deserves love.

This book is all about friendship, self-descovery, love and acceptance.
