Review: The Deahtless Girls, Kiran Millwood Hargrave

What I love the most about this book is the collection it is part of. Hachette Books decided to create the Bellatrix Book Project to finally give a voice to women who were forgotten, ignored or pushed aside in literature. Karen Millwood Hargrave took this opportunity to give the brides of Dracula their own voices.

In Bram Stoker’s Dracula the bride of Dracula are described as three seductive female vampire sisters who entrance men with their beauty to feed upon them.

Karen Millwood Hargrave reimagines the background story of the dark eyed brides of Dracula. The author imagines there are travellers twin sisters, captured into slavery and who inadvertently fell into Dracula’s clutches. The story is about sisterhood, sacrifice, love, self-worth and class differences.

The twin Lil and Kizzy are travellers who are captured the day of their divining day. They are brought into a household to become serving girls. From the beginning you see the difference between the sisters. The are identical twins, but Kizzy is still perceived as more beautiful than Lil, she has also more anger inside her and doesn’t trust the settlers. Lil is the opposite; she is calm and tries to accept the situation the make the best of it. In her slaver’s household Lil is charmed by a settler, Mira. They soon have a relationship, which is sweet and tender but doesn’t take much of the story. The main story is the relationship between Lil and Kizzy and how despite their differences they love each other and would do anything to keep the other safe.

The book was short and easy to read, but it lacked in action and didn’t thrill me. I was really hoping for more sparks.
